CAN Appointed by Everbright for Beijing ZGC
Reimagining the Retail Park

11 Dec 2020

CAN is proud to announce that the firm has been appointed by Everbright to the role of master architect for the regeneration of Zhongguancun Plaza Mall, having successfully outbid seven other international competitors with an inventive scheme that blends culture, art and nature through retail settings.

Located in the Zhongguancun area of Beijing, the project originally was built in 2000 and officially opened in 2006. The largest underground shopping center in China has, in its 14-year history, provided convenient retail services for the surrounding area. CAN transforms Zhongguancun Square into an urban destination where Technology, Art, Culture and Nature coalesce into one. With its prime location, our design solution for the Artpark will not only serve up a vibrant shopping experience, but also provide a platform for the entire Zhongguancun Science City to showcase China’s newest technologies through knowledge-sharing conferences and exhibitions: our subsequent proposal constructs a dynamic journey that weaves nature into the shopping experience by breaking down the traditional urban interface and opening up to Zhongguanzun Park above, the “green lungs of the city”.

A true re-interpretation of the retail-in-park/park-in-retail concept, CGZ Artpark will be the go-to destination for shopping, gaming, entertainment and experimental showcases, a unique approach to placemaking for the Beijing city.

The project is currently undergoing schematic design and under formal governmental review. Stay tuned for progress updates and we look forward to sharing more soon.
