Q1: Can you describe your philosophy when it comes to inclusive design and how it shapes your approach to creating spaces?<\/p><\/b>\n\n

“For me, inspiring inclusion in design means creating spaces that resonate with a diverse range of people. It’s about understanding and valuing different perspectives, and then reflecting that in every aspect of my work. Beyond site visits and regular communication with clients, I believe the key lies in deep listening and cultural sensitivity. I used to spend a considerable amount of time understanding the community’s history, its people, and their stories. <\/p>

Take our recent project near Kowloon City, for instance. It was important for us to reflect the rich cultural tapestry of the area. So, we integrated elements that represented both the heritage and the modern vibrancy of the locale. For instance, we incorporated designs inspired by traditional mosaic tiles and classic window patterns, seamlessly integrating these elements into the floor design and feature walls. It was our way of connecting the past with the present, creating a space that feels both familiar and excitingly new to a wide target audience. The most rewarding part is seeing people interact with the spaces we create. When they recognize a familiar cultural element or when the space sparks a conversation, it feels like we\u2019ve achieved our goal of not just designing buildings but fostering communities. That, to me, is the essence of ‘Inspiring Inclusion’.”<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Q2: You’ve been instrumental in the community service initiatives. How do you view design as a tool for social good?<\/b> <\/p>\n\n

“Design possesses immense potential as a tool for driving social good. Our active participation in community service initiatives has truly emphasized this transformative power. An exemplary instance is our recent project of renovating school libraries. Our objective extends beyond creating merely functional spaces; we strive to cultivate environments that not only facilitate learning but also foster a deep love for it while promoting inclusivity.<\/p>

We aim to provide students with a unique opportunity to directly interact with the design world through engaging workshops and interactive sessions. This empowers them to raise their voices and contribute creatively, granting them valuable insights into the industry and instilling a sense of ownership and agency. Our design workshop approach places a strong emphasis on addressing their everyday needs and actively involving them in the creative process. I take great pride in leading our team in driving these community service initiatives. For instance, for over a decade, we have been at the forefront of creating nurturing environments for new mothers in public spaces. This initiative showcases how thoughtful design can enhance everyday life, offering women a comfortable and convenient space for their ‘me time’.
